Temperatures are falling and it’s a great time to get out on the road. Here are a few of our favorite places to visit when the winter months roll around.
Hit the Slopes
You won’t have to travel far to enjoy a fun family ski trip. Ski Cloudcroft is the southernmost ski area in New Mexico and just minutes from us in Alamogordo. You’ll have 25 trails to choose from as well as other great activities if you’re looking for more relaxing options. If you’re new, the Cloud Nine Ski School will get you up to speed, or the winter tubing slopes don’t require any skill at all. Ski and snowboard rentals are available if you’re not bringing your own equipment. Another great option nearby is Ski Apache, just about an hour and a half northwest of town. You’ll have over 55 runs and trails to traverse there, along with rentals and lessons as well.
Ruidoso Festival of Lights Parade
Visit Wingfield Park on December 3rd to enjoy the Ruidoso Festival of Lights Parade. Bring an unwrapped toy for donation to Toys for Tots and spread holiday cheer while enjoying the parade, drinking some hot chocolate, and seeing Santa and his reindeer!
Christmas on the Pecos
For lovers of the trail of lights, consider floating by instead of driving with the light displays of Christmas on the Pecos. Set in Pecos River Park in Carlsbad, it’s a short drive over from Alamogordo to enjoy a spectacular light display on the shores of the Pecos River. The forty-minute boat tour will glide past Santa’s workshop and various southwest-themed light displays, all enhanced by the reflections in the water. Tours open on November 25th and run through December 31st.
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park
Winter is the perfect time to visit our nearby state parks. Top of the list is Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, which offers a range of fun activities for families, especially ones with a new Jeep from Casa CDJR. The park offers extensive hiking trails as well as camping areas if you plan to stay a little longer. There are picnicking areas and guided tours available to learn more about the park and its history.
