The Red Sands Off-Highway Vehicle Area is a short trip south of Alamogordo and offers a range of options for those looking to put their new or used Jeep through the paces. You’ll have a lot of space to roam with over 100 miles of trails. The area is composed of mesquite coppice dunes ranging from one to several meters high. It’s about 20 miles south of town off Highway 54, between mile markers 44 and 45.
Juando Pass Trail Head
Make the short drive south towards our other Casa Group family in El Paso to find the Juando Pass Trail Head just south of the NM-TX border. It offers great off-roading during any season, but with the cooler temperatures, you can really appreciate tackling the trails with your Wrangler completely unbuttoned. Located in Anthony, TX in the Franklin Mountains State Park, and makes a great destination for any Trail Rated Jeep.
Hackberry Lake Off-Highway Vehicle Use Area
Go west to test your Jeep in the Hackberry Lake Off-Highway Vehicle Use Area. The New Mexico Breau of Land Management will never be accused of catchy naming, but you’ll find over 55k acres of rolling stabilized dune lands and cliffs. There is a wide variety of terrain here that can challenge the most experienced off-roader, or provide a welcome for newcomers who are looking to try it. It is located near Carlsbad, NM, so it’s not a long drive from Alamogordo and makes for a great day trip destination.
